Embrace Consistency: The True Champion of Fitness

The importance of consistency

As a middle-aged woman, you've likely faced the ebbs and flows of motivation in your fitness journey. It's common to feel a surge of determination as you embark on new workout regimes, especially when the results start to show. However, motivation can be a fair-weather friend; the quiet power of consistency really carries us to our health and fitness goals.

Why is consistency more important than motivation? Simply put, motivation is a feeling; like all feelings, it's transient. It can be influenced by external factors – a stressful day at work, poor weather, or even just a change in routine. Consistency, however, is a habit. It's the commitment to show up for your workout, whether or not you’re buzzing with motivation.

Here are some tips to help you build consistency:

1. Create a Schedule

2. Start Small

3. Connect with Your 'Why'

4. Train with a friend

5. Track Your Progress

6. Create habits

7.Set goals

8. Celebrate small successes

Remember, while motivation gets the spotlight, the behind-the-scenes work of consistency will truly transform your life. Each small, consistent step is a powerful act of self-love and a building block towards your empowered self. So, lace up your trainers and honour your commitment to your health – one workout at a time. You've got this!

The Importance Of Setting Goals

In middle life, it is easy to lose yourself. I was there. I didn't enjoy being a lawyer, and being at work made me sad as I felt like I was failing my children. It is in this phase we often question our direction and purpose. But there's a powerful navigational tool we can use to steer ourselves back on course – SMART goal setting. By breaking down our aspirations into Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound objectives, we don't just chart a course for our future; we actively sail towards it.

Reasons to Set SMART Goals in Mid-Life:

1. Gain Clarity: Our desires and needs evolve as we mature. Setting SMART goals helps us articulate what we want and how to get there.

2. Boost Motivation and Confidence: There's a unique thrill in ticking off a goal from your list. It fuels our drive and reassures us that we're more than capable.

3. Regain Control: Mid-life often feels like a stage managed by external circumstances. SMART goals remind us that we are the captains of our ships, steering life in the direction we desire.

4. Foster Personal Growth: The beauty of setting and achieving goals is that we stretch beyond our current horizons. Each milestone is a stepping stone to becoming the individuals we aspire to be.

Creating Your SMART Goals:

1. Be Specific: Vagueness is the enemy of progress. A goal like "I want to be healthier" is nebulous. "I will walk 10,000 steps daily" pinpoints precisely what you will do.

2. Measure Your Progress: Numbers don't lie. Track your steps, monitor your food, record your sleep, and record your training hours. Seeing tangible progress inspires and indicates how close you are to your target.

3. Keep It Achievable: Ambition is admirable, but unreachable goals can be disheartening. Break down monumental tasks into smaller, manageable ones that you can confidently tackle.

4. Ensure Relevance: Align your goals with your values and long-term objectives. If personal growth is vital for you, a goal like learning a new language aligns perfectly with that vision.

5. Set a Time Frame: Deadlines prevent procrastination. They create a sense of urgency that can spur you into action. "I will complete a 5K run by the end of the summer" gives you a precise target date.

I've found that SMART goals are not just a strategy; they're a lifeline to rediscovering your zest for life and increasing self-worth. While not everyone wants to stand on stage in a bodybuilding competition, achieving this goal gave me a sense of empowerment, accomplishment, and progress that has been transformational. So, I encourage you to embrace the practice of SMART goal-setting. Chart your course, set your sails, and confidently journey towards the shores of your dreams. The horizon is vast, and it awaits your exploration with open arms.

Getting Started On Your Fitness Journey

Feeling lost in midlife is a pretty common experience. Often we become busy with work and family and frequently put our own health and wellbeing to the side. I experienced this after returning to work as a lawyer after having two babies. I felt like I was doing everything that everyone thought I should be doing but I no longer knew what I wanted and at some point wasn't even sure who I was or what I enjoyed doing. The good news is that recognising this is the first step towards change. Getting back into exercise is a great way to start to care for yourself again. Regular exercise does wonders for health – it fights diseases, uplifts mood, and increases lifespan. It also allows some time out from other daily activities to reset and can even create an opportunity to socialise. When embarking on an exercise regime, it is important to begin with simple steps that you can stick to. Whatever you choose, make sure that you can fit it in, as consistency is one of the greatest predictors of success. There are many options out there. Whilst cardio exercise is great, strength training is also valuable, especially after turning 40. Strength helps improve muscle mass and bone density. Starting a fitness journey in midlife is a powerful thing. It's okay to start slow and focus on steady improvement rather than an instant change. Embrace it as a way to rediscover yourself. It's never too late to start. So, take a step towards this journey of health and self-love today.

Finding Purpose

Starting an exercise regime requires more than just getting active, it demands defining your “why”. A powerful “why” can pave the way for personal growth and fitness transformation. At the time I started my journey, I had lost sight of myself. I was trying to be everything to everyone but really didn't know what I wanted any more. I didn't even know what movies I liked. I thought at the time that putting everyone else first was noble in some way. Instead, in a world where failure is not accepted, I was failing at being a lawyer, a mum and failing in my marriage. I started exercising to rediscover my identity. My purpose at that time was to find my purpose! This journey, had many ups and downs. It was filled with sweat, grit, and determination, and led to many personal milestones. I discovered in my 40’s my passion for working in the health sector and found a job that I love. Now my “why”' has broadened. It's about ageing well.
Beyond just looking good, I want to be strong, mobile, and mentally sharp. For me my 'why' is to live well for a long time so I get to enjoy my family. It is important to know your “why” as it gives direction and a sense of purpose. It breeds resilience, a vital attribute in fitness. Fitness isn't about pushing hard solely when inspired. It's about persisting through difficulties and slow progress. That said, sometime finding your why is not easy and requires time and self-reflection. It is part of the journey and whilst it helps with direction, sometime finding the “why” can be the “why” itself until you discover the real “why”. Whether you're commencing, struggling, or breaking through fitness plateaus, focus on your “why”. Let it motivate and remind you that each step is worth it. Remember, your “why” charts the course, but it's you who complete the journey. Fitness isn’t a means to an end, but an invincible bond with the better you.
