Finding Purpose
Starting an exercise regime requires more than just getting active, it demands defining your “why”. A powerful “why” can pave the way for personal growth and fitness transformation. At the time I started my journey, I had lost sight of myself. I was trying to be everything to everyone but really didn't know what I wanted any more. I didn't even know what movies I liked. I thought at the time that putting everyone else first was noble in some way. Instead, in a world where failure is not accepted, I was failing at being a lawyer, a mum and failing in my marriage. I started exercising to rediscover my identity. My purpose at that time was to find my purpose! This journey, had many ups and downs. It was filled with sweat, grit, and determination, and led to many personal milestones. I discovered in my 40’s my passion for working in the health sector and found a job that I love. Now my “why”' has broadened. It's about ageing well.
Beyond just looking good, I want to be strong, mobile, and mentally sharp. For me my 'why' is to live well for a long time so I get to enjoy my family. It is important to know your “why” as it gives direction and a sense of purpose. It breeds resilience, a vital attribute in fitness. Fitness isn't about pushing hard solely when inspired. It's about persisting through difficulties and slow progress. That said, sometime finding your why is not easy and requires time and self-reflection. It is part of the journey and whilst it helps with direction, sometime finding the “why” can be the “why” itself until you discover the real “why”. Whether you're commencing, struggling, or breaking through fitness plateaus, focus on your “why”. Let it motivate and remind you that each step is worth it. Remember, your “why” charts the course, but it's you who complete the journey. Fitness isn’t a means to an end, but an invincible bond with the better you.
